Device Overview

The iQ1500 is a 15-inch tall radar speed sign featuring an integrated driver feedback display, advanced logic controller, and precision radar detection system. Designed for enhanced visibility and reliable operation in various traffic conditions.

Power Requirements

iQ1500 non-portable signs require a 12V power system:

  • Solar Kit Options: Available for off-grid installations
  • AC Power Kits: For grid-tied installations

Powering Portable Signs

The portable iQ1500 features an integrated 20Ah battery system:

  • Charging: Use the provided AC charger which optimizes battery life through 6-hour charge cycles with automatic shutoff
  • Runtime: Approximately 3 days of continuous operation (may decrease as battery ages)

Mounting Options

The mounting bracket system allows for banding or anchoring/bolting to the mounting structure. For high-wind areas or enhanced crash integrity, anchoring and bolting are recommended over banding.

Pelco Systems

  • Pelco Bands: Part Number US-8124-06
  • Pelco Banding Buckles: Part Number US-8124-56

Standard tools used for tensioning bands can also be used for removal. Consider installation security when choosing mounting method.

Tools Required

  1. Adjustable Wrench and Socket Set: For tightening bolts and nuts
  2. Screwdriver Set: For panel access and component adjustments
  3. Power Drill: If drilling is necessary for mounting brackets
  4. Banding Tool: Essential for securing to round poles
  5. Metal Bands: Used with banding tool for round pole mounting
  6. Mounting Hardware: Surface-appropriate hardware
  7. Measuring Tape: For installation height and distance measurements
  8. Level: To ensure proper alignment for accurate radar detection
  9. Safety Equipment: Gloves and safety glasses for installation protection

Installation Steps

Step 1: Select the Proper Pole

Choose a pole that supports the iQ1500's weight, wind load, and additional equipment. Consider break-away poles for enhanced safety. Mount the sign approximately 7 feet above ground level.

Step 2: Remove the Bottom Bolt

Access the clamshell bracket by removing the bottom bolt at the back of the sign. This allows the bracket to hinge outward and slide up for adjustment or removal.

Step 3: Attach and Secure the Mounting Bracket

Secure the mounting bracket to the pole using appropriate hardware:

  • For Banding: Use minimum of 2 bands centered on the bracket
  • For Bolting: Use at least 3 each, 3/8" bolts with flat washers in 3-point configuration for stability

Step 4: Connect the Sign to the Mounting Bracket

Align and attach the sign to the mounting bracket ensuring secure connection.

Aiming the Sign

The iQ1500 features an internally mounted radar detector requiring proper alignment:

  • Face the sign into oncoming traffic, nearly parallel to traffic flow
  • Maintain angle of incidence of 5 degrees or less for optimal performance
  • Angles greater than 10 degrees may result in slower displayed speeds than actual vehicle speeds
  • Avoid positioning where receding traffic lanes fall within radar detection area

Wiring Instructions

Follow National Electrical Code (NEC) best practices. Only qualified technicians should perform electrical connections.

Power Supply Connection

The iQ1500 may include a TraffiCalm power supply with DC Barrel connector (2.5mm x 5mm). For signs without TraffiCalm power supply, use 18 to 14 AWG insulated wires. Use minimum 18 AWG wire for connections up to 6 feet; adjust wire gauge for longer distances to handle 3 Amp load with less than ¼ volt drop.

Steps for Connecting Power

  1. Safety First: Disconnect all power sources before starting
  2. Conduit Installation: Use liquid-tight conduit from power supply to field wiring plate
  3. Wiring Route: Run 12VDC Positive, common, and Earth/chassis ground wires through conduit
  4. Ground Connection: Attach Earth ground using ring lug to stud on field wiring plate
  5. DC Connection: If using barrel connector, cut off connector, separate wires, and strip ½ inch insulation. Identify positive wire by white stripe
  6. Terminal Connections: Connect positive and negative wires to appropriate terminals
  7. Reassemble: Secure field wiring plate back onto sign
  8. Power Reconnection: Reconnect power source
  9. Testing: Test sign operation to verify successful installation
