Testing a Guardian Button and Recording Common Failures
Use the assembly table tester to check the Guardian station’s call response, audio, vibration, and LED operation. Record any failed checks and other inspection findings.
1. Connect the test pigtail
Attach the pigtail to the termination strip in this order from left to right:
Position | Wire color | Connection |
1 | Red | Don’t Walk |
2 | Green | Walk |
3 | White | Neutral |
4 | Black | 12 VDC |
5 | Yellow | FT |
6 | Yellow | FT |
Connect the pigtail to the SPI on the assembly table tester.
2. Check the call with power off
Keep the power switched off. Press the actuator and verify that the ISO 242 registers a call in bypass mode.
Ottawa PCBA exception: If a constant call is present on the ISO 242 with no power applied, contact SMT to verify whether the board was configured as an Ottawa PCBA. Check this configuration before classifying the constant call as a failure.
3. Test the Don’t Walk phase
- Set the Phase switch to DW and turn on the power switch.
- Confirm that a start-up tone plays and the PCBA LED flashes.
- Listen for the locator tone.
- Momentarily press the actuator. Verify an audible acknowledgment tone and a call on the ISO 242 with each press.
- Press and hold the actuator for more than one second. The acknowledgment tone should play repeatedly.
4. Test the Walk phase
- Toggle the Phase switch to Walk.
- Verify that the vibro-tactile motor is energized and the LED illuminates.
- Press the actuator and verify that the locator tone is audible.
5. Record failures and inspection findings
Record the observed symptoms and test results. For calls occurring at a repeating interval, record the measured number of seconds between calls.
Area | Common failures or findings |
Call response | Constant call; no call; calls at a repeating interval. |
Audio and AGC | No audio; no AGC; loud audio; low audio; bad audio; static. |
Vibration and LED | No VTA; constant VTA; no LED; LED always on (limbo). |
Power and SPI | No power; overvoltage; SPI high-voltage failure; SPI low-voltage failure. |
Memory and operation | Memory issues; no program; station resets itself; station locks up. |
Wave and communication | Wave sensor issues; no communication; radio setting issues. |
Actuator | Hard to press; too sensitive. |
Condition and configuration | Corrosion; water damage; physical damage; setting issues; firmware problems. |
Other findings | Preventative maintenance; no fault found; other miscellaneous issues. |
