The TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series (M75-D2430-000X / M75-D2418-000X) is a next-generation Vehicle Speed Feedback device used as either a W13-20 sign or a W13-20aP plaque. The changeable legend is a true FHWA Standard Alphabet Series E numeral set at 8-inch cap height (8E), rendered at the height and width prescribed by FHWA, inside a black opaque contrast field as dimensioned on the 2024 SHS layouts for the 24-inch-wide family.
Product identity
The TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series covers only these two 8E members of the W13-20 / W13-20aP size family:
- W13-20 Vehicle Speed Feedback Sign — TraffiCalm part number M75-D2430-000X, overall size 24 × 30 in, 8E changeable numerals in a 10.0 in black panel (2024 SHS page 3-186, dimension K = 10, dimension T = 8E).
- W13-20aP Vehicle Speed Feedback Plaque — TraffiCalm part number M75-D2418-000X, overall size 24 × 18 in, 8E changeable numerals in a 10.0 in black panel (2024 SHS page 3-187, dimension H = 10, dimension Q = 8E). The plaque is designed to mount immediately below a 24 × 30 R2-1 Speed Limit sign.
Both configurations of the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series share the same 8E changeable-legend engine, K-band radar, 12 VDC power architecture, and software platform. The static-legend panel and overall sign height differ as shown in the 2024 SHS layouts.

MUTCD §2C.13 operating rules (mandatory)
The following MUTCD Standard statements are implemented in firmware and in the physical display of the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series (M75-D2430-000X / M75-D2418-000X). They are not optional features and are not dealer-configurable in a way that allows a field user to violate them.
- YOUR SPEED on the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series is a black legend on a yellow retroreflective background, except where MUTCD §§6H.01 or 7B.01 authorize an alternate work-zone or school-zone color treatment.
- The changeable legend displaying the speed of the approaching vehicle is a yellow luminous legend on a black opaque background.
- The vehicle speed displayed is an integer. Fractional speeds, tenths, and simulated analog motion are prohibited.
- The TraffiCalm W13-20 sign and W13-20aP plaque do not flash, strobe, change color, pulse the legend, chase, or wink individual LEDs as an attention device, and do not use any other animated element in the changeable legend.
- When no vehicles are approaching (radar idle / no valid target), the changeable display does not display a legend. The contrast field goes dark. A persistent “00”, dashed lines, a posted-speed reminder, or a smiling/frowning graphic in the changeable field is non-compliant.
- When used to display speed relative to a posted speed limit, the device is furnished as a W13-20aP plaque (M75-D2418-000X) and mounted below an R2-1 Speed Limit sign. Plaque width is 24 inches so that it matches the companion 24 × 30 R2-1.
- When used to supplement a horizontal-alignment advisory speed, the device is furnished as a W13-20 sign (M75-D2430-000X) and installed independently near the point of curvature.
MUTCD 2C.13 Guidance P05: the changeable portion should be approximately the same height, width, and stroke as the numerals on the Speed Limit sign it supplements. For the 24 × 30 R2-1, that numeral is an 8-inch Series E. Stroke width is not specified as a receiving-inspection dimension because a practical LED matrix cannot reproduce the ink-stroke of a cut Series E legend at this scale. Height, width, and spacing below are the measurable demonstration of that relationship for the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series.
Changeable legend geometry — 8E height, width, and contrast field
This section is the changeable-legend geometry of the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series required to follow MUTCD 2C.13 Guidance and the 2024 SHS layouts for the 24-inch-wide W13-20 and W13-20aP.
Numeral series and cap height
- Changeable numerals on the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series are FHWA Standard Alphabet Series E (Highway Gothic Series E, 2000 edition or the current FHWA-published Series E outlines). Seven-segment, fourteen-segment, or rectangular block digits do not reproduce Series E width or counter shape and shall not be used.
- Cap height (SHS dimension T on W13-20; dimension Q on W13-20aP) is 8.00 inches ± 0.15 inch, measured on the illuminated character from the topmost lit pixel of a flat-top numeral (5, 7) or the top of a round numeral (0, 8) to the corresponding bottom extreme.
- The display is a full-matrix LED array capable of rendering Series E outlines, including the open counters of 4, 6, 9, and 0. A discrete seven-segment or sixteen-segment module cannot satisfy this requirement.
Numeral width and inter-character spacing
MUTCD §2C.13 ¶05 calls for the changeable legend to be approximately the same height and width as the numerals on the companion Speed Limit sign. FHWA Series E widths scale linearly with cap height. Using the official Series E (2000) character-width table at the 4-inch design height, multiplied by 2.0, the 8E character widths used by the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series are:
Numeral | Series E width at 4 in | Required width at 8E | Allowed range (±5%) |
0 | 3.362 in | 6.72 in | 6.39 – 7.06 in |
1 | 1.200 in | 2.40 in | 2.28 – 2.52 in |
2 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
3 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
4 | 3.722 in | 7.44 in | 7.07 – 7.82 in |
5 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
6 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
7 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
8 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
9 | 3.242 in | 6.48 in | 6.16 – 6.81 in |
Additional geometry rules for the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series:
- Each illuminated numeral 0–9 measures within the allowed width range. Width is the horizontal distance between the extreme left and right lit pixels of that character, excluding inter-character spacing.
- Two-digit legends (the normal operating case) are optically centered on the vertical centerline of the sign as indicated by SHS dimension S on W13-20 and dimension P on W13-20aP (both marked VAR). The pair is not shifted to one side of the black field.
- Inter-character spacing between the two numerals of a two-digit speed follows FHWA Series E numeral-to-numeral spacing for 8-inch cap height. The clear gap is not less than 1.20 inches and not greater than 2.00 inches for typical pairs (25, 35, 45, 55). Numerals do not share a common compressed module pitch that causes the pair to read as a single block.
- The display supports 1 through 99 in 1 mph increments (or 1 through 159 in 1 km/h increments when configured for metric). Leading zeros are not displayed.
Contrast field — W13-20 sign, 24 × 30 in (M75-D2430-000X)
On 2024 SHS page 3-186, dimension K is the height of the black panel and is 10 inches for the 24 × 30 sign. Dimension T is the 8E numeral inside that panel. Dimension R is 10 inches from the vertical centerline to each vertical edge of the black panel, so the panel is 20 inches wide on the 24-inch face.
- On the TraffiCalm W13-20 24 × 30 sign (M75-D2430-000X) the black opaque changeable-legend field is 10.0 inches high ± 0.25 inch (SHS dimension K).
- The 8.00-inch Series E numeral is vertically centered in that 10.0-inch field, producing approximately 1.00 inch of black contrast above the cap line and 1.00 inch of black contrast below the baseline. Neither margin is less than 0.85 inch.
- The black panel on the TraffiCalm W13-20 is 20 inches wide ± 0.50 inch, centered on the sign, leaving approximately 2.0 inches from each sign edge to the panel (SHS dimension R = 10). The panel does not bleed into the border.
Contrast field — W13-20aP plaque, 24 × 18 in (M75-D2418-000X)
On 2024 SHS page 3-187, the 24 × 18 row provides a single-line YOUR SPEED legend above the changeable field. Adding the published vertical dimensions leaves a 10.0-inch black panel in which the 8E numeral (dimension Q) sits.
- On the TraffiCalm W13-20aP 24 × 18 plaque (M75-D2418-000X) the black opaque changeable-legend field is 10.0 inches high ± 0.25 inch.
- The 8.00-inch Series E numeral is vertically centered in that 10.0-inch field, producing approximately 1.00 inch of black contrast above the cap line and 1.00 inch of black contrast below the baseline. Neither margin is less than 0.85 inch.
- The black panel on the TraffiCalm W13-20aP is centered on the 24-inch plaque width and leaves yellow retroreflective margin outside the panel on both sides so the plaque reads as the SHS layout, not as an edge-to-edge LED module. The panel does not bleed into the border.

- Background of the static face is yellow retroreflective, ASTM D4956 Type XI prismatic (3M Diamond Grade or Agency-approved equal), except fluorescent yellow-green when the Agency specifies school-zone or pedestrian-emphasis treatment.
- Static legend YOUR SPEED and the border are black.
- Changeable legend is yellow/amber luminous. White, red, or bi-color “violator” legends in the changeable field are prohibited.
- Sign substrate for the static face is aluminum 5052-H32, 0.125 in, unpainted on the sheeting face. The electronic enclosure is 1/8 in ABS, black, or an Agency-approved equal UV-stable polymer.
Official layout references: 2024 SHS page 3-186 (W13-20) and page 3-187 (W13-20aP).
Display photometrics and LED construction — TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series
- The changeable legend uses amber AlInGaP LEDs, dominant wavelength consistent with MUTCD yellow luminous legend (approximately 585–595 nm).
- LED rated life is not less than 100,000 hours to L70 at nominal drive current.
- Viewing angle is nominally 30 degrees (not less than 25 degrees) so the 8E legend remains aimed at the approaching driver without becoming a floodlight off-axis.
- A full-matrix driver with ambient-light sensing automatically dims the legend at night to prevent glare while preserving the black-field contrast.
Radar sensor — TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series
- The speed sensor in the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series is a continuous-wave Doppler radar front end operating in the 24.075–24.175 GHz K-band (U.S. ISM allocation), license-free and FCC Part 15 compliant. The front end provides I and Q receive channels so approaching and receding targets can be discriminated.
- Maximum detection range is not less than 1,000 ft (304 m) for a typical passenger vehicle on a straight, unobstructed approach, subject to vehicle radar cross-section, approach speed, and aiming.
- Reported speed is the approaching vehicle's speed as an integer in mph or km/h as configured. Receding-only operation is selectable for two-way roads where the Agency wants feedback in one direction only.
- An optional external radar module (M75-SA300-RDR0 or equal meeting this section) is available for sites where the sign face cannot be aimed at the travel lane.
- Radar aiming and sensitivity are adjustable from the same local configuration interface used for the rest of the device.
Electronic construction — TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series
Specific device manufacturers and supplier part numbers for internal components are omitted. The finished TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series assembly provides:
- K-band I/Q Doppler detection with approaching/receding select, meeting the radar section above.
- A full-matrix amber display meeting the 8E geometry and photometric sections.
- Local Bluetooth configuration.
- Stealth, blank-when-idle, and no-animation firmware meeting MUTCD §2C.13.
- On-board non-volatile storage for firmware and traffic logs.
- 12 V operation inside the daily energy limits below.
Control electronics
Radar interface, LED drive, power conditioning, communications, and application processing reside on a manufacturer-designed printed circuit assembly. The Agency is not purchasing a third-party controller board as the sign.
Application processing and local wireless configuration are performed by an onboard module with Bluetooth Low Energy for the operator applications, sufficient working memory, and onboard or board-level non-volatile storage for firmware and configuration. Supplemental non-volatile storage retains firmware images, configuration, and logged traffic data across power loss. Supporting logic and connectors on the same assembly run operating modes and communications without a removable media card. Wireless capability beyond the local configuration radio, if present, is not a billed subscription feature for basic setup.
Radar front end and encapsulation
The radar transducer is a 24 GHz CW Doppler front end with integrated antenna and dual-channel (I/Q) reception. It is a front end only; speed calculation and target logic are performed on the control electronics. The front end remains FCC Part 15 compliant in the finished sign.
The radar module is mounted to the control assembly and fully encapsulated after assembly with an electronic-grade two-part potting compound that remains stable across the operating range, resists roadside moisture and vibration, and does not detune the antenna or crack in thermal cycling. Potting covers the radar transducer and its board-level interconnects. The antenna face remains functional. Encapsulation is not a substitute for the NEMA 3R enclosure.
LED devices
The changeable field is a full matrix of discrete amber SMD LEDs sized and populated to meet the 8E geometry and photometrics. LEDs are amber AlInGaP, dominant wavelength in the 585–595 nm band, nominal 30-degree viewing angle, and rated life of at least 100,000 hours to L70.
12 V input protection
The TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series operates from a nominal 12 VDC supply. The input is protected against reverse polarity, short-duration input interruption, and voltage transients typical of solar charge controllers and roadside 12 V systems. Input protection does not interfere with normal solar-charge voltage and leaves the sign inside the daily energy limits below.
Electrical, power budget, and solar suitability — TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series
Low energy use is a performance requirement of the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series. Operating voltage is 12 VDC continuous. The sign electronics do not require 120 VAC at the sign head. AC, where used, is converted remotely and fed as 12 VDC.
The device operates from (a) solar panel + battery + charge control, or (b) external AC-to-DC conversion. Solar and AC power equipment may be quoted as separate line items; the sign head is compatible with both.

Communications, configuration, and platform continuity
- Local configuration of the TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series is provided over Bluetooth (Class 1 or Class 2, v2.0 or later with EDR as applicable).
- Operator applications on current iOS, Android, and Windows, using the same operator interface as the Agency's existing TraffiCalm iQ Series fleet where such a fleet exists, provide full programming.
- Configuration is license-free at the device. Recurring SaaS fees may be offered for enterprise dashboards but are not required to change speed thresholds, units, Stealth Mode, or brightness.
- Wireless setup is possible from the shoulder without opening the enclosure.
Mechanical, environmental, and mounting — TraffiCalm DFB 2.0 8" Series
- Overall static-face dimensions are 24 × 30 in (±0.25 in) for the TraffiCalm W13-20 (M75-D2430-000X) and 24 × 18 in (±0.25 in) for the TraffiCalm W13-20aP (M75-D2418-000X).
- The housing is a low-profile design, thinner and lighter than prior iQ-series radar displays, to reduce wind load and simplify two-person installation on 2.5–3.5 in PSST, 4 in or larger wood posts, 4.5 in pedestal poles, and banded installations on most post types.
- Standard mounting hardware included with the sign: aluminum bracket built into the sign, two flared-leg brackets, and stainless fasteners. The hardware set supports 2.5–3.5 in PSST, 4 in or larger wood posts, 4.5 in pedestal poles, and banding to most post types.
- Enclosure rating is NEMA 3R minimum.
- Operating ambient range is −29 °F to +165 °F (−34 °C to +74 °C).
- The assembled sign is designed for continuous roadside vibration and for the wind load of a 24-inch-wide warning sign on a typical Agency installation.
