CTL2 / CTL3 Installation Guide

Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing CTL2 and CTL3 models, which are Solar Engine–Integrated Controllers or Collaborators. These systems are designed for pole or infrastructure mounting and include an integrated solar panel for optimized charging performance. Proper installation is critical to ensure reliable operation and long-term system performance.

Understanding CTL2 / CTL3 Models

To ensure correct selection and installation, review the model distinctions below.

  • CTL2: Indicates a 20-watt system.
  • CTL3: Indicates a 30-watt system.
  • BSC: Stands for "Basic" models, available in 20-watt (BSC2) and 30-watt (BSC3) versions. These systems are standalone units for single flashing signs that do not require communication with a collaborator or specialized programming and scheduling.

Applicable Models

  • M75-SA300-CTL2
  • M75-SA300-CTL3
  • M75-SA30M-CTL2
  • M75-SA30M-CTL3
  • M75-SA300-CLB2
  • M75-SA300-CLB3
  • M75-SA30M-CLB2
  • M75-SA30M-CLB3
  • M75-SA300-BSC2
  • M75-SA300-BSC3
  • M75-SA30M-BSC2
  • M75-SA30M-BSC3

Preparing for Installation

Mounting the Assembly
  • Integrated Mounting Bracket
    • Suitable for round posts using banding
    • Suitable for square posts using bolts drilled on 1-inch centers (e.g., Telespar)
  • Positioning Requirements
    • Mount the device at the topmost portion of the post to maximize solar exposure
    • Maintain 4–6 inches of post above the sign to prevent midday shadowing when using the standard bracket
  • Optional Mounting Kits
    • Optional top-of-post kits are available to meet site-specific installation requirements
Orienting the Solar Panel
  • Panel Direction
    • Solar panel must face true south for optimal charging
    • If true south is not achievable, orient as close to true south as possible
  • Panel Angle Adjustment
    • Loosen the side bolts on the standard bracket
    • Decline the panel to 15° + site latitude below the zero axis
    • Retighten all bolts to secure the panel
    • Additional declination may be applied in snow-prone regions to reduce accumulation
Securing the Assembly
  • Secure the assembly to the post using:
    • (2) 3/8-inch bolts, or
    • Approved banding methods
  • The integrated mounting bracket supports:
    • Bolting to square poles
    • Banding to round poles
  • Use the included TraffiCalm Ship kit brackets when mounting with banding

Installing Batteries and Making Connections

Battery Installation
  • Install up to four (4) batteries into the CTL, CLB, or BSC cabinet
  • Connect batteries using the integrated harness:
    • Red wire → 12V positive terminal
    • Black wire → Negative terminal
Device Connections
  • Connect field devices according to the appropriate wiring documentation
  • Refer to system-specific wiring diagrams and power maintenance documentation to ensure correct connections

Conclusion

Following this guide will ensure proper installation of CTL2 and CTL3 Controllers or Collaborators. Correct mounting, orientation, and wiring will maximize solar performance, improve system reliability, and extend overall service life.
